The entrance for this vibrant community centre was rejuvenated in conjunction with the renovation of the existing building.
Status: Built
The new entrance design was an opportunity to engage the building with the surrounding community by eliminating barriers, by making it more open and accessible, and by bringing the life of the Schul outside in a new outdoor space for events and activities.
The existing monolithic stairs to the main entrance were removed and replaced with generously-wide steps and a paved terrace, gradually leading up to the main entrance doors. Instead of only being an access route, the front landscape is now a true gathering space, enjoyable on an everyday basis as well as
being durable, functional, and large enough for community events.
A monolithic prism is the central feature next to the main doors. It is the anchor to the space and conveys permanence and stability through its sheer size and mass. However, a corner of the stone is missing and, on the face that is revealed, a dedication or inscription is intended to represent truth and wisdom that can only come through struggle and experience (inscription installed after photo was taken).
A sloped walkway and short ramps encircle the terrace, so that those who require an accessible route to the main entrance are never far from the heart of the activity.
Discrete lighting and handrails provide increased ease and safety for those with vision or mobility impairments.
A set of built-in benches define the edge of the terrace leading to the doors and provide a convenient place to rest momentarily, to chat and catch up with a friend, or to watch what’s happen on the terrace.
